The biochemistry and function of pannexin channels

► Pannexins are glycoproteins that form functional single membrane channels. ► ATP-release via Panx1 is involved in normal physiological functions and disease states. ► Panx2 regulates differentiation in neurons and can be palmitoylated. ► Panx3 plays a role in development of skin, bone, sperm and cartilage. ► Four Panx1-KO mice have been developed to study its role in lung, brain, and immune system.
