• An advanced copper-based composite with high strength and high deformability has been developed.

• The martensitic transformation of particles can be strain-induced in a copper-based composite.

• The martensitic transformation can greatly improve the strengths and deformability of composite.
A copper-based composite with a distribution of face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC) and martensite structured FeC particles has been developed, and most of FCC structured particles can be phase transformed into BCC or martensite structured particles after cold rolling at room and low temperatures, and the fraction of martensitic transformation increases as the deformation temperature is lowered. The martensitic transformation can significantly improve both the strengths and deformability of copper-based composite. A ductile fracture is still the main tensile fracture characteristic for the composite even in the cold rolling conditions. Accordingly, a cooperative deformation model was put forward in this paper.
