• The combinations of the component techniques led to increased decomposition rate constants.
• Decomposition can be represented by a pseudo first-order reaction model.
• MDEL/TiO2/K2S2O8 hybrid system was the highest obtained.
• A synergistic effect stemming from the coexistence of different treatment techniques.

An advanced oxidation process system to remove residual azo dye in water, called microwave-assisted UV (MDEL)/TiO2/K2S2O8 hybrid system, was developed and evaluated. The combinations of the component techniques led to increased decomposition rate constants, which are higher than the sum of each component technique. In particular, the decomposition rate constant obtained using the MDEL/TiO2/K2S2O8 hybrid system, which was the highest obtained in this study, was about 1.5 times larger than the sum of the rate constant obtained using the MDEL/K2S2O8 system and that obtained using the MDEL/TiO2 system.

The decomposition rate constant obtained using the MDEL/TiO2/PP hybrid system was much larger than the sum of that obtained using the MDEL/PP combination and that obtained using the MDEL/TiO2 combination, indicating that there was a synergistic effect stemming from the coexistence of different treatment techniques.Figure optionsDownload as PowerPoint slide
