Integral turbulent scales in unsteady rapidly varied open channel flows

• Velocity profiling measurements in unsteady surges and bores at 100 Hz.
• Velocity profile within inner region followed the log law before, during and after the surge.
• Integral turbulent time and length scales Lz,z/Lz,x ∼ 1.1–7.3 and Tz,z/Tz,x ∼ 1.1–14.4.
• Vortical structures with longer dimensions in the vertical direction after surge.
