Large energy consumption is one of the main problems to solve when developing a cost-effective absorption-based CO2 capture process. A systematic analysis on the energy demand would be a great help in tackling such problem. This study aims to provide integrated and quantitative analysis of the energy consumption of a scrubbing process for carbon capture. The major factors are identified and varied within a practically reasonable range to determine how the energy values change. The high energy demand of the conventional process is demonstrated, the status of current technology with lower energy costs is discussed, and possible directions for further development are analyzed. Additionally, the energy demand for two promising process concepts, a phase-separation process and a non-aqueous process, is studied showing that these promising concepts might not be beneficial in all cases.
