Extracts of six barley cultivars were analyzed for total phenolic content, condensed tannin content (TPC), antioxidant potential and DNA damage protection activity. Antioxidant potential was measured using 2,2- Diphenyl-1â² picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, 2, 2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) assay, Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), reducing power assay (RPA), Hydroxyl free radical scavenging activity (HFRSA), Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and Metal chelating assay (MCA). Results of our study clearly demonstrated the presence of bioactive compounds in barley cultivars selected for study. Total phenolic content vary significantly among different cultivars and the value ranged from 2.09Â 2.94Â mg/g gallic acid equivalent dry weight basis of barley (mg GAE/g dwb). Condensed tannin content in selected cultivars ranged from 40.96 to 99.91Â mg CE/100Â g dwb. Results of antioxidant assays support that among cultivar studied, BH-393 is rich in bioactive compounds with potent antioxidants. BH-393 posses antioxidant activities viz. DPPH (59.84%), ABTS (64.35%), HFRSA (44.84%), FRAP (2.16Â mM Fe2+/g), RPA (21.46Â mg QE/g dwb), CUPRAC (13.25Â mg AAE/g dwb) and TAC (9.25Â mg AAE/g dwb). Maximum DNA damage protection activity was found in cv BH-902.
