Correction of AVHRR Pathfinder SST data for volcanic aerosol effects using ATSR SSTs and TOMS aerosol optical depth

► High volcanic aerosol leads to bias in AVHRR SST. ► Dual-view of AATSR mean SSTs largely immune to volcanic aerosol effects. ► AATSR SST used to assess volcanic aerosol bias in AVHRR SST. ► Regression with TOMS aerosol optical depth allows correction of AVHRR SST. ► This method largely removes volcanic aerosol bias on AVHRR SST compared with AATSR.
