The application of the indirect boundary element method to optimum shape design

This paper presents a strategy for optimum shape design using the indirect boundary element method. The optimization problem is solved iteratively by transforming the implicit non-linear problem to a sequence of explicit linear sub-problems. Beginning with initial geometry, the boundary is modified until convergence to the minimum stress distribution is achieved. The optimization is applicable to any loading condition and is adaptable to any boundary element code. The paper also presents three formulations for computing the stress sensitivity using the indirect boundary element method. The optimization algorithm is applied to optimize the shape of 90 ° V-notch under tensile stress and combined shear and tensile stresses. The optimum shapes and stress distributions for wide ranges of σxyσxx ratios are determined. The monotonic convergence of the peak boundary stress reflects the high accuracy the indirect boundary element method provides in the computation of the stress sensitivities. In all cases, convergence is attained at the fourth iteration. It is also shown that minimizing the boundary stress is a process that can be described as a curvature re-distribution process. The curvature is decreased in the highly stressed segment and is increased in the low stressed segments. Finally, it is shown that the constant stress distribution along the entire moving boundary is not always the optimum solution. The portion of the boundary, over which the optimum stress is constant, is a function of the applied loading. For uniform tensile loading, σxx, the optimum stress distribution is constant along the entire moving boundary. The constant stress region along the moving boundary then decreases as the shear loading is applied.
