Abstract
We demonstrated a homeotropic liquid crystal (LC) alignment state on fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs) deposited by gas-phase method as a function of deposition time. The gas-phase method to deposit FSAMs was simple process and cost-effective. Contact angle data and surface energy analyses of the FSAMs showed that film formation occurs, and showed a correlation with the homeotropic alignment of LC molecules on the FSAMs. Stable LC alignments on FSAMs were achieved at deposition time over 60â¯min. In addition, high transparency and thermal stability of FSAM further enhanced its possibility as a LC alignment layer.
