Abstract
Clots removed during mechanical thrombectomy are rarely analyzed. However, histological analysis may help to determine the cause of the stroke. We report the first case of a patient with acute ischemic stroke due to a proximal intra-cranial arterial occlusion, related to cholesterol crystal embolization. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological analysis of the clot removed during the mechanical thrombectomy. Cholesterol crystal embolization is an uncommon and dreaded complication seen in the atherosclerotic patient. The treatment of this rare disease is not well established and primarily based on the removal of trigger factors.
