Abstract
► Coal chars have been shown to possess high catalytic activity in methane cracking. ► The char catalytic activity in methane cracking decreases with increasing coal rank. ► The char catalytic activity depends on the porous structure and surface chemistry. ► Carbon deposits from methane cracking causes deactivation of the chars.
