Abstract
A refined global-local finite element model is presented based on a mixed C1-continous formulation for bending analysis of laminated composite rectangular beams with small widths. Formulation of the present beam element that is free of shear locking, ensures continuity conditions of the displacements and transverse shear stresses at the interfaces, satisfies the non-homogenous shear tractions on the upper and lower surfaces of the beam, and its number of unknowns is independent of the number of layers. Comparisons made with previous results and results of the 3D theory of elasticity confirm accuracy of the presented formulation for the thin and relatively thick beams.
