► Physiological processes promoted by sleep disruption are sex-dependent. ► Acute and chronic sleep loss induced hyperalgesia in male and female mice. ► Nociceptive responses were more evident in sleep restricted females. ► Sleep recovery did not reverse the hyperalgesia induced by chronic sleep loss.
