Abstract
This article investigates the gender-specific impact of economic shocks and crises in the context of a developing country, using Kenya as a case study. The choice of Kenya has been motivated, on the one hand, by the occurrence of multiple crises that severely affected the country from 2007 to 2009; on the other hand, by the gender inequality that characterises Kenya in most spheres of society. In particular, this research focuses on Kenyan women's labour activities and conditions during the crisis, highlighting the unfair gender division of labour, within and outside the household, which negatively affected their time burden and general welfare. This research makes a combined use of quantitative and qualitative data in an attempt to enrich the research results. It attempts to overcome the shortcomings of using only quantitative or qualitative approaches and thus demonstrating the complementarity of both approaches.
