Abstract
► Biochars composed of amorphous phase C exhibited the highest sorption capacity. ► Amorphous biochars had similar sorption to the condensed sediment organic matter. ► Isotherm nonlinearity of herbicides was related to aromatic C content of biochars. ► Pyrolysis at 400 °C seems optimal producing biochar as effective herbicide sorbent.
