Abstract
The failure of an industrial building in the industrial zone of Adana, Turkey has been investigated. All the columns on the outer side of the building failed due to short column effect during the Adana-Ceyhan earthquake on June 27, 1998. The amount of lateral reinforcement was not adequate and the hoops were not in accordance with the local code. The second storey of the building moved about 10 cm with respect to the base. A dynamic analysis of the building was performed and suggestions to eliminate the short column effect have been presented.
