Abstract
Results of direct numerical simulations (DNS) are presented for turbulent flows past a stationary circular cylinder and past a rigid cylinder undergoing forced harmonic oscillations at Reynolds number Re=10000. This significant increase in Reynolds number (compared to previous DNS) is accomplished by employing a multilevel-type parallel algorithm within the spectral element framework. Comparisons with the available experimental data show that the simulation has captured the flow physical quantities and the statistics of the cylinder wake correctly.
