Abstract
► We study gender differences in attitudes toward staying in competitions. ► Women voluntarily quit competitions at a faster rate than equally skilled men. ► The premature exits by women are exacerbated when they are in a minority. ► Men's decisions are not affected by the gender composition of the groups. ► Structural factors partially explain the underrepresentation of women at the top.
