Abstract
⺠We study gender differences in attitudes toward staying in competitions. ⺠Women voluntarily quit competitions at a faster rate than equally skilled men. ⺠The premature exits by women are exacerbated when they are in a minority. ⺠Men's decisions are not affected by the gender composition of the groups. ⺠Structural factors partially explain the underrepresentation of women at the top.
