Abstract
This paper presents the development and the validation of the Approach and Avoidance Questionnaire in sport and physical education settings (QEA-EPS) for French teenagers. This instrument is composed of four subscales (three items by subscales) assessing mastery approach goals, performance approach goals, mastery avoidance goals and performance avoidance goals. Four studies have been conducted with 1440 participants to: (1) propose a valid factorial and reliable translated version applicable to sport and physical education settings (study 1), (2) confirm the factorial structure of the instrument to a larger sample size (study 2), (3) test the temporal stability of the instrument (study 3), and (4) test construct validity of the scales by assessing correlations with other constructs as postulated by current theories (study 4). The obtained results are acceptable; they enable us to considered as valid this instrument for French teenagers, and contribute to the empirical validation of the 2Â XÂ 2 model (Cury, 2004Â ; Cury, Schiano-Lomoriello, et Da Fonséca, 2003b; Elliot et McGregor, 2001) in the sport et physical education setting.
