Abstract
► Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and supportive counseling for acute stress were tested. ► Both interventions reduced posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms. ► There was no significant difference between the two treatments but effect sizes favored CPT. ► Cognitive processing therapy can be tolerated by recent survivors of assault.
