Abstract
⺠Patients with schizophrenia show a paradoxical disjunction in state and trait emotional experiences. ⺠These emotional symptoms are critical to understanding schizophrenia because they are associated with poor prognosis and are largely intractable. ⺠We propose five hypotheses to explain this paradox supported by the schizophrenia and the larger psychological and neuroscience literatures.
