► Effects of self-monitoring on overt behavior and implicit processes. ► The experimental group monitored snack-eating, the control group alcohol-drinking. ► Consumption decreased only in the experimental group. ► Explicit satisfaction of the habit remained the same in both groups. ► There appeared to be small implicit cognitive changes in both groups.
