► This study investigates semantic preview benefits in reading Traditional Chinese. ► Traditional Chinese differs from Simplified Chinese in orthographical complexity. ► Semantic preview effect was obtained in single fixation and gaze durations. ► Preview duration modulates the phonological preview benefit. ► Semantic information can be extracted early in the parafovea when reading Chinese.
