Abstract
⺠We examined the automaticity of processing emotional facial expressions. ⺠Event-related potentials were observed across different task conditions. ⺠Perceptual encoding of angry expressions was automatic. ⺠Cognitive emotion encoding depended on depth of processing. ⺠Typical components of perceptual and cognitive emotion encoding occurred in parallel.
