Abstract
► Adults and children exhibited a left occipito-temporal gradient of word specificity. ► Word specific regions were more anterior in adults relative to children. ► Specificity in these regions for adults was driven by increased real word activity. ► Anterior word-specific activity correlated with measures of reading fluency. ► Results add to existing knowledge about neural changes during reading development.
