Abstract
► Generic knowledge (knowledge about categories) is crucial to human cognition. ► We tested whether children expect such knowledge to be widely shared among adults. ► 4- to 7-year-olds heard novel facts and were asked if others (e.g., mom) knew them. ► We compared generic and non-generic facts that were otherwise matched in content. ► Children expected generic facts to be better known than non-generic facts.
