Abstract
⺠Generic knowledge (knowledge about categories) is crucial to human cognition. ⺠We tested whether children expect such knowledge to be widely shared among adults. ⺠4- to 7-year-olds heard novel facts and were asked if others (e.g., mom) knew them. ⺠We compared generic and non-generic facts that were otherwise matched in content. ⺠Children expected generic facts to be better known than non-generic facts.
