► If an odor mixture is sniffed repeatedly, one odor dominates then another - rivalry. ► This report details new methods for detecting olfactory rivalry. ► This report also examined whether people are aware that rivalry is taking place. ► Rivalry can be detected by the experimenter comparing sensory reports. ► Participants do not seem to notice the occurrence of rivalry.
