Abstract
► We examine how unconscious and conscious knowledge develop during concept learning. ► On one class of theories, conscious knowledge comes first and is proceduralized. ► On another class, unconscious knowledge comes first and becomes explicated. ► Consciousness was estimated with subjective measures based on confidence ratings. ► Unconsciousness decreased and consciousness increased with time, supporting the latter theories.
