Abstract
⺠We employ a mirror-masking technique that prevents conscious perception of words. ⺠Using event-related potentials, we compare unconscious and conscious word processing. ⺠Masked words and non-words evoke different ERP responses at early processing steps. ⺠ERP differences between non-masked words and non-words occur at later time intervals.
