Abstract
► We investigated the nature of associative information in episodic memory. ► Pairs were rearranged within and across pair-types in a list discrimination design. ► Rearranging pairs within, but not across, pair-type influenced cued recall performance. ► Manipulating pair-type did not influence single item recognition performance. ► Distinct associative representations are needed to explain the data.
