Abstract
⺠We investigated why scalar implicatures are costly to process. ⺠We compared accuracy as a function of time to sentences with and without implicatures. ⺠Delayed implicatures are not due to retrieval probabilities or semantic complexity. ⺠Implicatures are costly to derive and interpret.
