Abstract
⺠We studied the processes underlying adaptation in co-speech hand gestures. ⺠Iconic gestures are adapted to only if they are congruent with speech. ⺠Only those features of a gesture that match a conceptualization are adapted to. ⺠Non-matching features are not copied, but changed to fit the conceptualization. ⺠Adaptation at the conceptual level may drive adaptation in representational gestures.
