Abstract
⺠A systematic reductive approach is developed to resolve the cortical circuitry. ⺠In vivo whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings represent a key to probe circuitry. ⺠Excitatory-inhibitory interplay largely determines functional response properties. ⺠Elementary circuits can be derived from spatiotemporal patterns of synaptic inputs.
