Abstract
► We developed an innovative experimental protocol to investigate reading processes. ► The protocol included letter presentation and voluntary self-paced reading aloud. ► We accurately described the reading-related potentials recorded in healthy children. ► We identified preparatory, pre-lexical, lexical and post-lexical reading periods. ► Our study represents a reference model to study dyslexia and reading disorders.
