► Depressed participants have smaller bilateral thalamus and right hippocampus. ► Depressed participants perform worse than healthy controls on a verbal memory task. ► Depressed participants use the inferior memory strategy serial clustering. ► In depressed participants serial clustering is correlated with hippocampal volume.
