► We used the repetition paradigm to study how novel metaphors are formed in the brain. ► Conventional metaphors elicited repetition suppression within the left IPL region. ► Novel metaphors elicited repetition enhancement in bilateral IPL regions. ► Novel metaphors became conventionalized in the brain after one repetition. ► This study reveals how novel metaphors get processed and conventionalized in the brain
