► Young adults retrieved autobiographical memories associated with musical cues. ► Music-cued memories spanned three levels of specificity, without explicit instruction. ► Music-cued memories were highly emotional and had low levels of prior rehearsal. ► Specific memories were associated with increased activity in dorsal frontal regions. ► All autobiographical memories engaged medial frontal and temporal regions.
