Abstract
⺠We examine if a memory of a visual feature is equivalent to attending that feature. ⺠We find that visual working memory content inadvertently guides visual attention. ⺠The strength of the visual guidance depends on when observers expect the memory test. ⺠When the memorized information may soon be needed, guidance is stronger. ⺠Thus working memory content is dormant or active depending on attentional needs.
