Abstract
► Young and older adults constructed and elaborated past and future autobiographical events during an fMRI scanning session. ► Both age groups engaged a similar set of regions during the autobiographical tasks relative to the control task. ► There was an age-related reduction in activity during construction, in regions such as the medial temporal lobes. ► Later during elaboration, older adults showed increased recruitment of lateral and medial temporal regions relative to younger adults.
