About turn: How object orientation affects categorisation and mental rotation

► We examined orientation sensitivity of ERPs for recognition and mental-rotation tasks. ► Orientation sensitivity was initially only related to the stimulus orientation. ► Sensitivity to orientation became task specific after about 280 ms. ► Mental rotation began after about 340 ms. ► Therefore visual processing is affected by object orientation before mental rotation.
