► We propose that implicit self-esteem regulates connection after relationship-threat. ► Experimental and observational methodologies were used to test this idea. ► Implicit self-esteem predicted nonverbal connection behavior following the threat. ► Partner commitment moderates the effect of implicit self-esteem on connection.
