► Examined the effects of target race (Black/White) on impressions and communications. ► Internal motivation to respond without prejudice (IMS) moderated race effects. ► Those low in IMS showed evidence of race-based shifting standards in judgment and memory. ► Positive communications about Black targets predicted increased racism.
