Abstract
⺠Examine the population heterogeneity in the BMI-mortality link. ⺠Overweight reduces mortality risk among black men, older adults, and people in the lowest income stratum. ⺠Class I obesity is not associated with higher mortality risk. ⺠Class II/III obesity increases mortality risk among whites, young and middle adults, and people with higher socioeconomic status.
