Abstract
⺠Chronic environmental stressors may link neighborhood disadvantage to poor health. ⺠Existing studies on stress and cortisol have focused exclusively on individual-level stressors and psychosocial characteristics. ⺠This study tests the association of neighborhood characteristics and diurnal cortisol patterns in 308 adults from Chicago, IL. ⺠Those from neighborhoods with more stressors and low social support had lower levels and flatter patterns of cortisol. ⺠This adds to growing evidence of hypocortisolism among chronically stressed adult populations.
