► Critical incidents induce PTSD-symptoms, anxiety, and depression. ► PTSD-symptoms are more pronounced in the longer than the shorter term. ► Health professionals suffer from impaired functioning but relatively few seek help. ► Professionals should be aware of and prevent harmful effects of critical incidents.
