Abstract
► Health care rationing institutions should be contextualised in the shifting relationship between knowledge governance and the governance of health care in contemporary societies. ► Health care rationing decisions are underpinned by conditions pertaining to the distribution of uncertainty between standard-related knowledge and disease-related knowledge. ► Accepting and fostering the exploration of uncertainty within health care priority setting systems should provide those systems with increased social robustness.
