Abstract
⺠In West Germany, trade union membership reduces the individual dismissal probability. ⺠This study is the first to document such a private gain from individual membership. ⺠The dismissal probability falls most strongly for females and blue collar workers. ⺠In the case of plant closures, individual membership has no effect.
