Abstract
⺠A new approach to dense and jammed granular media is presented that is different from that of Edwards. ⺠The thermodynamic formalism is set up in terms of elastic potential energy. ⺠The configurational temperature relates to quadratic forms of the stresses. ⺠The most probable microstate could be useful in understanding random close packing.
