Abstract
⺠A linear stability analysis shows that transverse dunes are intrinsically unstable. ⺠Transverse dunes moving on the bedrock decay into a chain of crescent-shaped barchans. ⺠If the wind blows nearly from the same direction, the dominant dune shape is the barchan.
