Abstract
⺠Global food production will need to meet the demands of an increasing population. ⺠The Millennium Development Goal aims to alleviate poverty, improve access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. ⺠Human excreta pose a threat to human health and wellbeing especially in the developing world. ⺠Ecological sanitation proves an integrated approach that prevents pollution, sanitises faeces and urine and recovers nutrients for food production. ⺠The co-benefits of nutrients recovery need to be fully exploited if multiple environmental and social challenges in the developing world are to be addressed.
